Note: Published copy not available, but here is a text-only version of  a short write-up of the Mohonk Mountain Home Resort.

Its a good example of an advertorial style of writing where the client’s style guide stated quite emphatically, “DO NOT USE THE VERB “TO BE” (IS, WAS, WILL BE, ETC.) or your copy will be rejected immediately.”  Hence, writing this copy was a great exercise in writing ONLY active verbs. (Always a good goal to strive for in any copy.)

Last of the Mohonkians

A manse for all seasons, Mohonk Mountain House means nirvana for travelers looking for a kind of Shawganunk redemption––for body and soul. Set in New York’s spectacular Shawganunk Mountains, this resplendent 251- room turreted Victorian Gothic, a National Historic Landmark, charms guests with its marvelously topsy-turvy, hodge-podge design that just begs to be explored.

Albert Smiley, the founder of Mohonk and a friend to world leaders, envisioned his retreat as a place where “A library of good standard works,” entertainment, healthy recreation and lectures, would bring clarity to the mind and serenity for the soul. Today, Mohonk continues that worthy tradition. While generations of Smileys smile down from the handsome woodwork walls, guests experience memorable Mohonk moments with such theme programs as: The Wonderful World of Words, Festival of the Arts, Tower of Babble and every woman’s favorite: The Art of Chocolate.

“Mohonkians” puruse recreation actively—even the art of doing nothing. With over 300 fireplaces overall, relaxation just happens. Tower rooms come with views and verandas and all rooms are marvelously decorated in true Victorian and Arts & Crafts style. But while the rooms are welcoming, few people stay in. One can see why. Recreation abounds, including ice skating, daily hikes, fishing and carriage rides. Golf is enjoyed on a par-35 Scottish designed course. Best of all, it’s included in the price.

When it comes to children, Mohonk Kid’s Club has no problem telling kids to go jump in the lake, hunt frogs, or scramble rocks. Parents and other adults can take advantage of the brand-new Mohonk Spa and Fitness Center, a 30,000 square-foot wing that houses a full-size fitness center, an indoor swimming pool, and a spa.

Food, glorious food, is in ample abundance. The resort offers three main meals a day plus an afternoon delight of tea and cookies, and in the summer, lobster barbecues.

The word “Home” in Monhonk Mountain Home is not a misnomer. Mohonk, one of the last great 19th century American resorts, treats each guest as a family member in an environment that is awesome on all levels, yet intimate and cozy.
